January Travel Calendar- Summer in Southern Africa & Beach Getaways

  • South Africa:
    • Cape Town: Ideal for hiking Table Mountain and enjoying the beaches (Camps Bay, Clifton). It’s peak summer in Cape Town, perfect for outdoor activities.
    • Garden Route: Warm weather for exploring Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, and Tsitsikamma National Park.
    • Kruger National Park: Although it’s summer (wet season), safari is still good for birdwatching, and it’s less crowded.
  • Zanzibar (Tanzania): Excellent for beaches, diving, and snorkeling. Warm and sunny throughout the month.

February – Safari and Beaches

  • Tanzania (Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater): February is great for witnessing the calving season of wildebeest in the Serengeti, with many baby animals being born.
  • Madagascar: Great for wildlife exploration, especially in the rainforests of Andasibe or the unique Avenue of the Baobabs.
  • Mauritius: Ideal for a beach holiday, water sports, and relaxing on white sandy beaches.
  • South Africa: Eastern Cape for the summer safari experience (Addo Elephant Park and private reserves).

March – Victoria Falls and Safaris

  • Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe/Zambia): Peak flow after the rains, creating the most dramatic display of the falls. The mist is spectacular, and the falls are at their fullest.
  • Botswana: Great for safaris, especially in Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta. Wildlife is abundant, and the wet season is ending.
  • South Africa: Start of the autumn safari season in Kruger. The weather is still warm, and fewer tourists are around.
  • Rwanda & Uganda: Ideal for gorilla trekking as the rains have subsided, and the trails are more manageable.

April – Safari and Gorilla Trekking

  • Rwanda/Uganda: Dry season (ideal for gorilla trekking). Visit Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda or Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda.
  • South Africa: Safari in Kruger and Madikwe Game Reserve. Animal sightings are easier due to thinner vegetation, and it’s not as crowded as in peak winter months.
  • Madagascar: Continue exploring the island’s wildlife and unique ecosystems as the wet season comes to an end.
  • Zanzibar: Great for beach lovers, diving, and exploring the historical Stone Town.

May – Safari and Cultural Exploration

June – Winter Safaris and Whale Watching

  • South Africa: The winter safari season begins, and it’s an excellent time for game viewing in Kruger National Park and Addo Elephant Park.

  • Botswana: Safari in the Okavango Delta and Makgadikgadi Pans offers unique experiences, particularly with the influx of wildlife during the dry season.

September – Wildflowers, Safari, and Migration

  • South Africa: Namaqualand (Western Cape) is a must-visit in September for wildflower season, where the entire landscape is carpeted in color.
  • Kenya: Still in the midst of the Great Migration in Masai Mara. The river crossings may slow down, but wildlife viewing remains excellent and a great option to add to the travel calendar.
  • Botswana: Okavango Delta and Chobe offer superb safari experiences as the dry season peaks.
  • Victoria Falls: The flow of the Zambezi is still strong, though it begins to decrease. Early September still offers impressive views.
